7 HIGHLY EFFECTIVE HABITS SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE FOLLOW
Have you ever been inspired by listening to a motivational podcast, attending a speaking engagement or reading a lingering infamous quote on your social media feed?
Only to have the same experience that rapidly gave you on a high, bring you right back to earth?
These positive affirmations (often confused with unintentional gloat from the sender), are meant to enlighten people with the concept of “If I can do it, so can you.” However, the problem with this motivational notion, is that while it undoubtedly gives you the fuel you need to pursue your own dreams, it fails to point out the years of foundation these successful people have built.
Believe me when I say that I used struggle with holding on to the various words of wisdoms that exploded out of self-help books, courses and life changing speeches. What eased my stress, in addition to my approach of “picking up what works for me and leaving the rest on the floor,” was continuously applying what successful people in my field did, in order to get the results I wanted.
It’s important to remember that these said results (often perceived as an overnight accomplishment,) soar through the understanding that, obstacles and criticism are pre-requisites to eminence.
What are some things successful people do that others don’t?
THEY KNOW THEIR WHY
If you haven’t read Start With Why by Simon Sinek, I am going to need you to purchase it as soon as our chat is over!
(Seriously, it costs less than most of what we eat on our lunch breaks.)
There isn’t one highly successful person in this world who lack clarity, when it comes to why they do what they do - everything you do should be devoted to that one purpose.
Now there are general reasons why some of us go to the jobs we hate, stay in the relationships that no longer serve a purpose or deal with things we shouldn’t have to - as significant as they may be, those reasons aren’t our why, but rather our excuses.
Your why is the driving force behind every. single. thing. you do.
It’s not because rent is due in a month or groceries need to be stocked up.
Your why is your motive for pushing through unimaginable experiences, to find your greatest gifts.
THEY’RE OBSESSED WITH THEIR CRAFT
Successful people eat, sleep and breathe their craft.
Even when they aren’t working on it, their demeanor represent the hunger to be great.
When you love what you do and know why you do it, how you do it almost never feels like a job. Continuously learning, investing and strategically working on your craft are some the necessary ingredients to success.
By no means am I saying you should build unhealthy habits!
It also doesn’t mean you should work 8 hours a day then come home and not work on your own craft.
Believe me, I’ve been there. You’re not tired, you’re uninspired.
THEY OUTWORK PEOPLE
Speaking from experience, attaining goals and being lazy just don’t go hand in hand. There will always be someone smarter, better looking, stronger but I refuse to allow anyone to outwork me.
Neither should you - you have master potential, so remember that rest is for those who have already reached their peak.
And I promise you, even these people aren’t resting!
Successful people don’t rest when they’re tired. They rest when they are done.
THEY ALLOW THEIR MISTAKES TO HAPPEN
One thing I used obsess over was perfection. My brain would automatically tell me it was the end of the world, even with the most minuscule errors. I had to unlearn this crazy system and stick to a reassuring mantra.
Perfection over progression.
Again for the people in the back.
Perfection over progression.
You’re human - allow your mistakes to happen and learn from them. Take those lessons and move on to the next goals, because how can you possibly be great at the next thing, if you’re busy dwelling over the previous one?
Especially if it didn’t even work out?
You will mess up, allow it!
THEY ARE DOERS
I firmly believe that we are all fearfully and wonderfully made. We are here for a purpose and have a hidden gift, waiting to be unwrapped.
A talent that can only be revealed and not learned. Unfortunately, many of us take our talent to the grave because we are so busy dreaming and masterminding.
Stop dreaming and start doing! If you’re waiting for a sign, here it is.
Hard work comes before inspiration, so stop waiting for the motivation to kick in and just dive in.
Successful people don’t wait, they do.
THEY ARE THE BEST VERSION OF THEMSELVES
Notice I didn’t say someone else.
Being a millennial in such a digital age is challenging. It’s so easy to sink into the black hole of comparison and follow what someone who is succeeding in their journey is doing.
10 years of hard work equals an overnight success! Stop comparing their finish line to the beginning of your labor.
You are already competing to keep up with your self-discipline, self-development and self-sabotage. Why add more to your madness by competing with someone else?
THEY INVEST IN THEMSELVES
Investing in yourself, from your creative world to your professional atmosphere, is one of the greatest return on investment there is. Are you involved in developing yourself or are you taking things by day? You can't pour from an empty cup, so it's very important to make sure yours is consistently full. Investing in yourself sends a very clear and potent message:
I am continuously growing and no one can take it away from me.
I urge you to go to seminars, sign up for courses, read often and place yourself in a room full of people who are where you'd like to be. Yes, it's scary as heck. But would you rather be scared and successful, or comfortable and complacent?
I have to stress that the above require time and consistency – if it were easy, everyone would be doing them. It's inevitable to sometimes feel like you're constantly struggling but you have to bounce back and go harder!
So to answer the million dollar question – What are some things successful people do that others don’t? They implement simple routines that become life altering over time.
