Hey dolls! (And gents)
With fashion week around the corner, what better way to introduce an inspiration other than interviewing a fashion designer! Things like this make me want to just keep striving even if there are unbearable challenges along the way. After all, for what would something be worth if it is easily attainable? That’s exactly why Melissa is the Muse of the Month. She seriously inspires me. I had the pleasure of interviewing her on her amazing MYM collection. Here’s what she had to say.
S&S: MYM, what does your clothing line stand for?
MYM: Melissa Yulanda Mitchell
S&S: How did you get into fashion designs? Why fashion, of all the things you thought of doing?
MYM: I started after interning for Diesel, Rag and Bone, Victoria Beckham, and Jay Mendel. But it wasn’t until after Diesel that I learned hands on experience when I helped create some of their pieces for their Spring/Summer 2012.
S&S: Did you go to design school? Was it always your dream to design or did something click one day?
MYM: No, I never went to any design schools. I taught myself how to sew. I used to take my mother’s clothing, cut them up and fit them to my size. When you’re young, you do certain things that you never notice until you’re older. Now I look back and wonder if that’s where it all started.
S&S: What inspires you? What keeps you going everyday? What do you do to refuel and gain ideas?
MYM: Fabric shopping is one thing that inspires me. When I see a fabric that I love, a vision for what I will design automatically comes to mind. My family, friends, this little girl named Leah who designs and looks up to me as a role model, but most importantly me. I CANNOT give up! I set goals for myself, and I cannot fail.
S&S: How do you stay so humble? Usually when people become a tab bit successful from something they have succeeded, they become cold, yet you're so heart warming.
MYM: I don’t want people to turn away from me. I don’t want them to think I have money and no longer care. I like when people like me for me. This goes back to being bullied. I have always disliked arrogance. You should always remember where you came from no matter what because you can literally have something one day and lose it in a second.
S&S: Your line seems very sensual yet classy, do you think you’ll eventually try clothes that are more “everyday sophisticated” or keep on track with your current look?
MYM: NO, I want to do everything! I want to cover every inch of a woman. Wedding dresses, gowns, club outfits.
S&S: What do you see for the future of MYM?
MYM: I see myself owning my own boutique. That’s currently my biggest goal. I eventually want to carry men and children’s clothing.
S&S: Have you had any “big names” wear your brand yet? If not, if you could have one person wear your designs, who would it be?
MYM: RIHANNA! I haven’t had any huge names yet, just many “Social Network Light” shed on my collection.
S&S: What advice would you give to anyone who’s trying to get their start in the fashion industry?
MYM: Stay true to yourself and what you believe in. It sounds cliché but if I didn’t stay true to myself, I would be lost trying to impress everyone. Pretty much, represent your brand in the best way you would like it to be.
