If you have or do reside in NYC then you know what a bodega is. The dictionary defines it as a small grocery store, especially in a Spanish-speaking neighborhood. To me? It's a nostalgic place I visited countless amounts of times as a preteen, right after school for a few bags of chips and a quarter juice. A dollar really had me thinking my life was together and the days my parents gave me $5.00?! Boy! I had the ENTIRE week planned out. I wasn't allowed to play out for so long especially as a new immigrant, so I would take my sweet time going home after school just so my mates and I could happily grab our snacks and catch up on what teenagers talked about.
It was only right to head back there and shoot a look when my nieces triggered my memory through their obsessive desires to continuously head to the Bodega aka Deli. For some sunflower seeds, a bag of Doritos and that good old juice that now costs $1.75. I silently giggle as I thought of all these tricks my sisters and I had just so we were allowed to do the same.
Oh the memories of being a Bodega Mamacita.
